The Role Of Carbon Brushes in Motors

Carbon brushes play a very important role in motors, and it is an important part of motors. Specifically, the main functions of carbon brushes are as follows:

Transfer current: The main function of the carbon brush is to transfer the power supply outside the motor (generally the excitation current of DC) to the winding (excitation winding) of the rotor through the slip ring (on the rotor, running with the rotor) to provide electrical energy for the motor.
Changing the direction of the current: In a DC motor, the carbon brush acts as a commutation, keeping the incoming DC current flowing in from one end of the rotor, allowing the motor to rotate in one direction. At the same time, carbon brushes are also used to change the conductive coils of the rotor, which in turn change the rotor poles, which in turn change the motion of the motor.
Electrostatic charge: Carbon brushes also direct electrostatic charge on the large shaft to the ground, preventing charge build-up and damaging the motor.
In addition, carbon brushes have certain mechanical strength, electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as lubricating properties, which allow them to effectively export and introduce electric currents as sliding contacts on motor commutators or slip rings.

In general, carbon brushes play a vital role in motors, and almost all brushed motors use carbon brushes to ensure the normal and efficient operation of the motor. At the same time, due to the friction and spark erosion between the carbon brush and the commutation ring, it is also a wearing part in DC motors and needs to be replaced regularly to maintain the performance of the motor.
